During the Great Depression, a Northern Kentucky couple, Rose and George Steinford, witnessed many needy children in their Northern Kentucky community who were not experiencing the joys of Christmas. Rose and George assumed the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus in their community by purchasing, repairing, and distributing used toys to these children.
It was not long before the community became involved in the Steinfords' mission and, although Rose passed away in 1973 and George in 1980, the Covington-Kenton County Jaycees helped George start the "Rose and George Steinford Toy Association" prior to his death. This 100% volunteer-run tradition, now known as "The Steinford Toy Foundation," continues ever since by providing Christmas joy to needy families throughout Northern Kentucky.
Toys are purchased using funds from the foundation's fundraising activities and community donations, as well as direct toy donations from area businesses and individuals who help coordinate toy drives each year.
